What To Feed The Children

A nutritious diet is essential for an all round growth in children. A diet choice consisting of important vitamins and minerals helps in overall physical growth and aids in the cognitive development of children.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have recommended 7 healthy food choices to be included in the children’s diet.

Fruits and vegetables, cereals such as oats , rice, wheat and barley, tubers and plantains such as sweet potatoes, yam and potatoes are said to be rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fibre and fructose that nourishes and gives energy to the body.

Legumes and nuts are rich source of plant-based protein and fibre that is cost-effective and have less fats. Also, dairy products such as milk, curd, buttermilk, and cheese are recommended as they are rich source of calcium and protein. These nutrient-dense superfood is said to be highly beneficial for children.

White meat such as chicken and fish as well as eggs is recommended as it gives iron and protein that would keep the children strong and heal their bodies when hurt. Healthy fats such as vegetable oils, avocado fats, and nuts butter is said to aid to children’s health too.

FAO also advises that 1/3 of the food plate should be vegetables and have also instructed to buy organic and fresh food that are produced locally , besides, practicing the habit of eating nutritious food even in school cafeteria.
